Facts and Numbers
On 23 June 2005, the German federal and state governments agreed on an initiative to promote top-level research at German universities with the longterm goal to strengthen science and research in Germany in a sustainable manner.
The total funding budget of the Excellence Initiative sums up to 1.9 billion Euros for a period of 5 years between 2006 and 2011, and accordingly 2007 and 2012, as there were two rounds of proposals. In the second funding period (2012-2017) the total budget sums up to 2.4 billion Euros.
Funding is divided into three funding lines:
- Graduate Schools to promote young researchers
- Clusters of Excellence to promote world-class research
- Institutional Strategies to promote top-level university research.
In the second round, the federal and state governments approved of 45 Graduate Schools, 43 Clusters of Excellence, and 11 Institutional Strategies.
RWTH Aachen University has been awarded funding for all three funding lines within the Excellence Initiative of the German federal and state governments. With this program, the RWTH is provided a unique and valuable opportunity to substantially sharpen its scientific profile within just a few years and to orient it towards its core competences, in order to conduct top-level research and improve its international visibility. To this end, RWTH Aachen University has developed a strategic plan which is reflected in the Institutional Strategy and leads to a superordinate goal: In contrast to a university primarily characterized by the coexistence of individual strengths, especially in engineering, the RWTH will now develop into an integrated interdisciplinary university of technology that is able to meet global challenges.
With a total funding of 180 million Euros, the following RWTH proposals were approved:
The Institutional Strategy "RWTH 2020: Meeting Global Challenges"
The Graduate School "Aachen Institute for Advanced Study in Computational Engineering Science" (AICES)
The Clusters of Excellence in the current period:
- "Integrative Production Technology for High-wage Countries"
- "Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass" (TMFB).
The Clusters of Excellence in the former period:
- "Ultra High-Speed Mobile Information and Communication" (UMIC) (till 2014)
