Lightweight Production

Lightweight products can save ressource and energy costs not only while being manufactured but particularly during usage. Through weight reduction robots or means of transportation such as road and rail vehicles and airplanes require less power for the same motion or distance and therefore allow the reduction of energy consumption.


The Institute of Plastics Processing (IKV) investigates the complex material behaviour of composites like fibre reinforced plastics (FRP) as lightweight construction material to design very light components which withstand highest strains and standarts. Projects to improve the process chain and suitability for series production are implemented in cooperation with Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology (ILT) and Institute for Textile Technology (ITA).

The Aachen Centre for Integrative Lightweight Production (AZL) research subject focuses on the implementation and optimization of continuous process chains for mass production of lightweight composites and multi-material systems. Solutions are realized within cooperations with industrial partners, for example the production of lighter vehicles to reduce CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.
