The new Machine for Friction Stir Welding PTG Powerstir 345C

In the project the integration of multiple different manufacturing technologies (single and hybrid processes) within so called Multi-Technology Platforms (MTP) is investigated. Besides general aspects such as the creation of a systematic design method for MTP or the investigation of machine integrated measurement methods, the project particularly focusses its research activities on the integration of manufacturing technologies into multiple demonstrators on a component and process level.

As a part of the diverse research activities in 2014 it was possible to enrich the demonstrators regarding several different aspects. A major step was the purchase of a new machine for friction stir welding. The new machine is significantly more powerful than the old machine and is already used for investigation of different facets of joining. For the immediate future the integration of a system for conductive support of the friction stir welding process is planned.

On May 8, 2014 the machine was installed at the Centre Metallic Building in Aachen - Melaten.
