The Brazilian student Thais Moura is currently visiting Aachen as a Guest Researcher in the scope of the Cluster research project Self-optimizing Assembly Systems. At her workplace in the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) the 21-year-old is engaged with the exciting future theme about Robotic Assembly Systems since February 2017 for a period of one year.

Thais Moura was born in the south of Brazil in a city called Curitiba. Currently she studies in Joinville, Brazil, Mechanical Engineering for her Bachelor. Since her graduation, it was her wish to spend some time abroad during her studies. Germany was her top priority, because her home university has many contacts to German universities and especially RWTH Aachen offers great possibilities in the field of mechanical engineering. Her desire to work with robots was always the focus of attention, “I always wanted to program and develop robots”, Moura says.

The project “Automated assembly of large-scale parts under flow conditions” in which she is involved in has a focus on the development of a system, which realizes the assembly of large components in motion by metrological support. These systems can for example be applied in the production of truck driver’s cabs. Hereby it is possibly that, two industrial robots assemble the windshield independently so that it fits perfectly. In the scope of the project, Thais is responsible for programming an autonomous guided vehicle that it is able to move freely in the factory and lift objects with a weight up to three tons.

Besides her work at the WZL, Thais is a member of the university choir of the Collegium Musicum of the RWTH, “it is incredible to sing with so many voices in such a high quality choir”, she says. Besides participating in the choir, she is also taking a fencing course as part of RWTH college sports. A special highlight during her time in Germany was the visit at the tripoint.

After her stay in Aachen, she wants to finish her Bachelor in Brazil. For her Master, however, she would like to return to Germany. Living abroad is a great experience, which she recommends to everybody.

We wish her good luck and a great time in Aachen!
