Cluster member Chao He, from the Chair for Laser Technology LLT, attended the 19th International Symposium on Laser Precision Microfabrication (LMP) in Edinburgh, Scotland from June 25 to 28, 2018. The focus of the four-day symposium was on laser-based micro and nanotechnology and dealt with current topics in the laser application for the precise production of various materials. The symposium, which took place for the first time this year at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, provided a forum for the international exchange of knowledge and is one of the most prestigious symposiums in the field of laser technology.

In his paper “High-efficiency sub-m multi-beam interference structuring for large-scale surface using ultrashort laser pulses”, CoE scientist Chao He focused on ultra-short pulsed laser micro- and nanostructuring with high precision and efficiency. The micro-/nanostructures act as a functional surface on injection molds to improve the reproducibility of complex optical components and are being researched as part of the cluster project Multi-Technology Products. As part of the "Internet of Production", the aspired next phase of the Cluster of Excellence, the laser technology is to be integrated as a tool due to its high flexibility and robustness. The next phase will serve to broaden the perspective and develop new use cases.

The symposium provided a great opportunity to network with industry and research participants and to answer their questions. “Several participants were very interested in our work and asked detailed questions about our projects”, He says. “I also had the opportunity to meet some laser technology colleagues and to gather new ideas on how our technology could evolve. All in all, it was a very useful and fruitful experience” the CoE scientist says, summing up the visit to the symposium.
